Carsphairn’s 54th Burns Supper
Many celebrations across Dumfries and Galloway have been taking place this month to celebrate the Scottish bard, Robert Burns, and Carsphairn was no exception, holding their 54th annual fundraising Burns Supper in Lagwyne Hall on Friday 17th January 2025.
The dedicated team of hall volunteers organised an evening of memorable entertainment and a delicious three course meal, provided and served by the Castle Douglas based catering company, Caterbirds.
The evening’s entertainment began with Ryan Fergusson, filling the hall with harmonic notes from his accordion, as he accompanied Melissa Ade dressed as ‘Poosie Nancy’ in the celebratory parade of the haggis.
James Wallace provided a highly gripping ‘Address to the Haggis’ and also a beautiful rendition of the Burns song, ‘Green Grow The Rashes O’. The evening’s exemplary entertainment continued with Alec Ross capturing the full room’s attention and thoughts with his recitation of ‘The Immortal Memory’.
Local vet, Graham Bell then had us all in tears of laughter, with his ‘Toast to the Lassies’, which was followed shortly after by Fiona Durham’s very witty, yet humorous ‘Reply from the Toast’.
Carsphairn Burns Supper Chairman, Robert McTurk then took to the stage floor as he presented his legendary and theatrical recitation of ‘Tam O’ Shanter’ with his trusty hobby-horse mare Meg, at his side.
Attendees from near and far, came together to share in this cultural event and for this unique evening of laughter, song, poetry and excellent food. The evening drew to a close as Christine Whipp gave a heartfelt vote of thanks on behalf of the Lagwyne Hall Committee to all for making this event such a fantastic success.
The room then all joined hands for the final song of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ before parting ways until next year.
