Carsphairn SWI catch up after the summer break
September 19th saw members of Carsphairn SWI get together for their first meeting after the summer break. There was lots to catch up on and discuss.
Dorothy Faulds and Melissa Ade welcomed everyone. The business was then conducted. Nancy White gave an update on the finances. Other items included a report on the summer outing on 13th June to Culzean Castle. Members who went along spoke about the day and how it offered a range of information and experiences. The staff in the castle were very helpful and informative. Innes and Evelyn enjoyed looking for the lego characters in each room which were dressed in appropriate costume – they were not the only ones who had fun with that challenge! The courtyard and book shop provided great opportunities for shopping and the play area and zip wire were a draw for some too. Despite the inclement weather the visit was much enjoyed. A gathering at the Hollybush Inn on the way home for tea rounded off the day. In all, a successful and entertaining outing.
Members then reported back on the Rural Ramble that had taken place on 11th August to the Woodhead lead mines. Anna Campbell led the walk and provided such a lot of fascinating information about the mines and the people who lived and worked there. Members from other SWIs went along too. Anna was able to take a route up to the school past the smelters’ work shop and cottages which was a departure from the path and provided walkers with a different perspective. On return to Lagwyne Hall a delicious and bountiful tea was laid out by members which was very welcome. The weather was kind as it was a sunny, warm day among many that were not. Dorothy thanked Anna on behalf of everyone for her huge contribution to the day. Lesley Malcomson, Stewartry SWI President, thanked everyone who had contributed to providing the lovely refreshments. Business then moved to upcoming events and dates as well as a discussion about the Christmas celebration.
Sing Say or Something Pay – There followed many contributions by members of poems, stories and song. These journeyed from home territory to the other side of the world and back in time to the present day. There was a wonderful range of items which were thought provoking, heart rending, funny, surprising and reflective in varying measures. Members were richer in spirit having listened to everyone’s contribution. A lovely and varied spread of refreshments was provided by Irene and Judith. These were very welcome and enjoyed by everyone.
Lavinia kindly judged the competitions. The results were as follows:
Savoury Muffin - 1. Sheila Little.
Flower of the Month - 1. Nancy White 2. Melissa Ade 3. Isobel Cuthbertson.
The raffle was drawn. Everyone very much enjoyed catching up after the summer break and there was lots of chatter with nobody that keen to head for home. Irene led everyone in singing ‘Donald Where’s Yer Troosers?’. When one and all had helped to tidy up there was agreement that the night had been a great success.
