Foss Day Exhibition in Dalry Town Hall
An open exhibition which commemorates the achievements and life of one of Dalry’s unsung heroes - Hugh Foss.
He lived in Dalry from 1952 until his death in 1973. He moved here after several years working at Bletchley Park as a cryptanalyst and was responsible for breaking a days’ worth of the German Enigma Code. That day was May 8th, 1940, and in honour of this achievement the date was henceforth referred to as Foss Day. It is the 85th Anniversary this year.
Whilst at Bletchley he organised a Scottish Country dancing group and devised several of the dances which are still enjoyed today. He continued his passion when he moved to Dalry and held regular dancing sessions within the hall for the ladies of the Dalry branch of the Scottish Rural Institute.
We hope you enjoy discovering all about this brilliant man as we honour him and show our pride and appreciation of all he did for us.
